Description: Product Description
The Sun Also Rises (Vol. I, 247 pp.): With the publication of The Sun Also Rises in 1926, Ernest Hemingway had his first great success as a writer. This is the novel that spoke for what Gertrude Stein called "the lost generation," the young men and women who lived through the heady and uncertain period following World War I. Depicting a group of lively but aimless expatriates who travel across France and Spain - drinking, fishing, and going to the bullfights at the Pamplona fiesta - this book gained a special hold on the young Hemingways contemporaries. A Farewell to Arms (Vol. II, 332 pp.): A Farewell to Arms has long been considered the definitive American novel of World War I and the definitive antiwar novel. Set on the Italian front in the closing days of the war, it tells of the tragic love affair between Frederic Henry, a wounded American ambulance driver, and his English nurse, Catherine Barkley. The sacrifice of millions of lives in an incomprehensible conflict is the backdrop to a desperate and doomed love story that is Hemingways most powerful work. For Whom the Bell Tolls (Vol. III, 471 pp.): Written in the late 1930s, when democracy faced its greatest peril, For Whom the Bell Tolls is Hemingways masterful novel about love, death, honor, and betrayal. An enormous best seller in 1940, it is considered one of Hemingways most philosophical works. The Complete Short Stories (Vol. IV, 650 pp.): The Finca Vigia Edition, this volume collects all 71 of Hemingways short stories and includes a pair of eloquent tributes to the author one by his three sons and one by his longtime publisher.
