The very beginning of gonzo, Thompson relates the chaos of his early journalism career in Puerto Rico. He aludes to earlier experiences writing in Europe that tease you into wondering more about his past. In 1959 he is picked up by a whirlwind of a rapidly changing society. He drinks rum constatly all day and scrapes by with a few unfortunate friends. As in his later works Thompson displays a willingness to throw himself into any experience avaialble.
