Reviews: Marianne (Australia) (2012/06/26):
Girl Missing aka Peggy Sue Git Murdered is the 8th stand-alone novel by Tess Gerritsen. Dr Kat Novak, recently divorced Assistant Medical Examiner, encounters a number of bodies which look like drug overdoses, but the drug is a mystery. One Jane Doe has the phone number of a rich, successful businessman on her person. The businessman, the very attractive Adam Quantrell, happens to be the owner of a large pharmaceutical company which happens to be developing a long-acting morphine analogue. Quantrell is also estranged from his step-daughter, who worked in the very lab where the drug was being researched, and is now missing. Gerritsen starts with a great plot which has a few twists to keep the reader guessing, a female lead with plenty of pluck, a good and gorgeous hero and plenty of action. She then manages to pack a lot more into this novel: election-year politics, corrupt police, the mob, gangs, newly developed drugs, a missing daughter, witness protection, car theft, a bomb, a fire and blackmail. None of the characters is what they first seem to be. Gerritsen’s medical background serves her well with the details of autopsies and drug effects. This reissue of Gerritsen’s early work contains an introduction by the author, in which she states that she considers this novel the bridge between her romantic suspense novels and her crime fiction. Excellent early Gerritsen.
